Okezie Ikpeazu was born on the 18th of October, 1964 to the family of late Pa Ishmael and Deaconess Bessie Ikpeazu of Umuebere in Umuobiakwa village, Isialaukwu, Mbato Autonomous Community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria.
He started his early education at Amaise Central Primary School, Umuobiakwa. He further enrolled in Ihie High School, Isiala Ngwa where he took his School Certificate Examination in 1979.
In 1980, Okezie Ikpeazu gained admission to study Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Maiduguri, graduating with a B.Sc. (Hons.) Second Class Upper Division in August 1984. He also obtained a Masters of Science Degree in Biochemical Toxicology from the University of Maiduguri in 1990. In 1994, Ikpeazu obtained a PhD, in Biochemical Pharmacology from the University of Calabar.
Okezie Victor Ikpeazu PhD has handled several positions in the Nigerian educational system. He worked as a part-time lecturer in the Science Laboratory Technology Department, University of Maiduguri, from 1986 to 1987 before moving to the Calabar Polytechnic where he lectured from 1990 to 1992.
Between 1994 to 1996, he worked as an Administrative Manager, Cash Bond Investment and Credit Ltd, in Lagos.
From 2000 to 2002, he worked as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Department of Biochemistry, Ebonyi State University College of Basic Medical Sciences. In 1998, he started serving as the Acting Head of Department of Applied Biochemistry, Faculty of Applied Natural Science, Enugu State University of Technology, a position he handled until 2001. Dr. Ikpeazu also worked as Lecturer 1 in the same the department.
From 2003 to 2004, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu also worked as a Masters Degree External Examiner, to the Department of Biochemistry, University of Nigeria.
Okezie Ikpeazu’s first step into public service was in June 2002 when he was appointed as the first Transition Committee Chairman of Obingwa Local Government Area. He also served as SA to the then Abia State Governor on Environment and Sanitation.
This was followed by his appointment as the General Manager, Abia State Passengers Integrated Manifest and Safety Scheme (ASPIMSS), a position he handled from 2007 to 2009.
Between 2009 to 2010, he served as the Chairman, Governing Council at Abia State College of Health Technology.
In 2013, Okezie Ikpeazu was appointed Deputy General Manager, Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) Aba and Environs
Okezie Ikpeazu contested for the governorship of Abia State under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and won. He was however sacked as the governor after a Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri declared Alex Otti as the winner of the 2015 gubernatorial election.
Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on June 27, 2016, ordered Ikpeazu to vacate his office as governor upon allegations of false information and forgery of documents prior to the 2015 gubernatorial election. The suit was however dismissed by a Federal High Court in Owerri.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu ran for a second term under the PDP platform and emerged the winner of the election.
On February 26, 2020, Okezie Ikpeazu was appointed Vice-Chairman of the PDP governors’ forum.
Governor Ikpeazu is also a member of the Biochemical Society of Nigeria, Nigerian Environmental Society and the Rotary Club.
Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu is married to Nkechi Caroline Ikpeazu and the marriage is blessed with four children, two boys and two girls. Nkechi Ikpeazu has worked as a teacher and an accounts executive with Camway Ventures Lagos. She is a sports promoter and the major backer of the women football premier league club side, Abia Angels FC.
She is also the founder of the Vicar Hope Foundation (VHF), an NGO through which she has built several homes for indigent persons. VHF is also involved in providing better healthcare for mother and child, battling cancer, sickle cell diseases and diabetes. The foundation is currently building a sickle cell hospital/cancer diagnosis and treatment centre at Umuahia, the capital of the state.
Okezie Ikpeazu and his wife, Nkechi Ikpeazu are both devoted members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church where Nkechi also serves as a Deaconess.
